Thekkady

Thekkady is probably the best place in Kerala to observe wildlife. From the mighty Indian elephants to the Great Indian tigers, this place has it all.  Elephants, deers, boars, bisons and lion tailed macaques are a common sight in the reservoir area. Other animals like tiger and leopard can also be seen.

The tourism department offers trekking right into the heart of the forest either on foot or on top of an elephant.  The resort located in an island in the centre of the lake is the ideal place to observe these wild animals. If you are more adventurous, you can take the road from Moozhiyar to Thekkadi via Gavi winding through the thickest forest.  Elephants are a common sight on this path.

Boating through the Thekkady lake is a very pleasant experience and you can observe many water birds at close ranges.
Thekkady is considered a heaven for natural spices such as black pepper, cardamom, cinnamonand clove.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary  is spread across 777 km, of which 360 km is thick evergreen forest. The Wild Life Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978.  The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam which was built in1895 adds to the charm of the park.  The greatest attraction of Periyar is the herds of wild elephants that come down to play in the lake. Sanctuary can be accessed by walk, boating or jeep safari.

MangalaDevi Temple - It is situated about 15 km from Thekkady and sits at an altitude of 1337 m above sea level. It is surrounded by lush greenery and is closed throughout the year except during the Chitra Pournami festival. At other times tourists can still view it by getting a special letter from the forest ranger.  The view from the temple premises is spectacular and one can see part of Eastern Ghats and some villages from adjacent state of Tamil Nadu.  Plantation Resort situated in Vandanmedu (near Thekkady), 4000ft above mean sea level(MSL), and this little town is the largest producer of Cardamom in the entire world.
